They had planned for Jordon to go home yesterday but decided to keep him an extra day. Up until Saturday Jordon continued to feel good. Every weekend Jordon must take three days of Bactrim because children with compromised immune systems are susceptible to a dangerous pneumonia. Jordon had his first dose for the weekend on Saturday morning. Saturday afternoon he developed a full body rash. He was a bit miserable. He continued to take the Bactrim throughout the weekend. The nurses discussed with the doctors Jordon's rash and the doctors explained that with this chemotherapy about 25% of children develop a rash. When the doctors saw Jordon this morning they immediately thought his rash was a drug rash and not a side effect of the chemotherapy. They have discontinued his Bactrim and will try a different antibiotic. They also kept Jordon and extra day because they are trying a different drug to make Jordon's immune system recover. He has been taking one shot of Neulasta after chemotherapy. Unfortunately the Neulasta makes his white blood count go too high. So now he must do a shot at home everyday until his counts go back up. The one shot was ideal but they think that could also be causing his bone pain and now if his counts get high we are able to stop the medicine.
All in all Jordon felt pretty good this week. We are thankful that he was able to get through this tough chemo with such a good spirit. The rash is miserable for him, but he doesn't let it get him down. He has so much going on in that fragile body of his, I am amazed he handles it all so well. I saw a shirt this weekend that said "Fight like a kid". If they all fight like Jordon those words are motivating.
We will be coming back up to Children's later on this week to try the other antibiotic and pray that his body will be protected from other illnesses and the remainder of treatment will go by without complications.
