Being disconnected without a computer this hospital stay, the blog is a bit outdated.
Friday evening Jordon began to run a low grade fever. Before leaving the hospital Wednesday, they discussed with us the importance of bringing him in with a fever. When we got to the local hospital they drew Jordon's blood to confirm what I already knew. He was neutropenic. What this means is that he has no immune system, similar to that of a newborn baby. This is good because it means the chemotherapy is working and like they predicted his immune system would be at its lowest 7-10 days after a round of chemotherapy. This means the chemotherapy is able to do its job. When children run a fever and are neutropenic they must be seen right away because the fever could be from an infection. If it is from an infection their body, or immune system, is unable to fight it off, so the hospital must fight it off for them. With that being said they sent us up to Children's to be treated. Blood cultures for bacteria do not come back for 48 hours, so we must wait to see if they are positive for infection and must wait till his immune system is high enough to leave. The fever could also mean that his body is fighting the tumor, but without the blood culture we cannot be for sure. They say only about 20% of the time the blood culture is positive for infection and that some kids run a fever everytime they are neutropenic and they never know why.
We will keep you posted with the hopes that we are able to come home soon. It was so nice to be home, Jordon was relaxed and comfortable. Thank you for all for everything! Prayers for today are that the cultures are negative and that the chemotherapy continues to work. Praises are that we got to come home and enjoy friends and family and that we live in such a wonderful community.
